Breaking Form: Cézanne, Picasso & Braque
How did art go from realistic portraiture to fractured geometric shapes in a single generation? Follow the thread from Cézanne's apples to Picasso's fractured faces. The birth of Cubism — told as a story of obsession.

The Met Museum
Emotion into Color: Monet, Van Gogh & Impressionism
The Impressionists were rebels. They painted outside, in broken light, without finishing their strokes — and the critics hated them. Monet and Van Gogh show us what happens when artists paint how they feel, not what they see.

The Met Museum
Light and Shadow: Dutch Baroque Masters
Rembrandt and Vermeer mastered something no other artists had: the meaning of darkness. What they chose to illuminate — and what they left in shadow — tells us everything about who had power, who was seen, and who was not.

Sacred Stories: The Bible in Renaissance Art
Before photography, painting was how entire civilizations understood their faith. These artists were not illustrators — they were theologians with brushes. We'll decode the symbols, the scandals, and the surprising humanity hidden in sacred imagery.

The Met in One Visit: Icons Across Time
Ancient Egypt. Knights in armor. Monet. The Met spans 5,000 years in a single building. This tour connects the dots — showing how human beings have always made art to answer the same questions: Who are we? What do we fear? What do we love?

The Met Cloisters · Fort Tryon Park
The Cloisters: Unicorns & the Garden of Existence
A medieval castle reassembled in upper Manhattan. The Unicorn Tapestries hang here — seven panels of impossible beauty depicting a hunt, a death, and a resurrection. We'll walk medieval gardens and talk about what humans have always sought: meaning in nature.

Nicholas Roerich Museum · Upper West Side
Visions of the Spirit: The Roerich Museum
One of New York's best-kept secrets. Nicholas Roerich painted the Himalayas and the cosmos in the same breath. This intimate townhouse museum is a portal into mysticism, spirituality, and the belief that art can be a path to something beyond the visible world.

Art as Revolt: Duchamp & the Avant-Garde
Marcel Duchamp put a urinal in a gallery and called it art — and nothing was ever the same. This tour traces the artists who said no to everything the art world stood for, and asks the question that still matters: what makes something art, and who decides?

Never Set Foot in an
Art Museum? Perfect.

Most people think you need to "know about art" to enjoy it. You don't. You just need someone to show you how to look — and to remind you that your first reaction is the right one.

Zak's newbie tours throw out everything intimidating about museums. No dates to memorize. No movements to keep straight. No pressure to "get it." Just a few extraordinary works, the human stories behind them, and a guide who genuinely wants you to fall in love with looking.

01

We Go Slow

Just four or five works, explored deeply. No marathon. No museum fatigue. You leave energized, not exhausted.

02

Stories, Not Lectures

Every painting is a human story — love, fear, ambition, faith. Zak gives you the person behind the brush, not a textbook.

03

Your Take Matters

"What do you think is happening here?" There are no wrong answers. By the end, you'll have opinions about art — and that's the whole point.

04

Zero Judgment

Ask anything. The "dumb" questions are usually the best ones. This is a pressure-free space to be curious out loud.

Best newbie starting points: Emotion into Color (Impressionism) and The Met in One Visit.

Zak Hermann
Art Guide & Educator · New York City

A Teacher Who's
Seen the World

Zak Hermann spent years teaching History in New York City's public schools — where he learned something essential: the best way to understand where we are is to understand where we've been.

That belief took him across the world to study art firsthand — not in textbooks, but in the actual rooms, churches, and galleries where it lives. From the Louvre to the Hermitage, from the Uffizi to the Rijksmuseum, Zak has stood in front of the originals and asked the same questions he now asks his guests: What were they feeling? What were they afraid of? What were they trying to say?

He holds a Master's degree and brings the same passion to a first-time museum visitor as he brought to his students in the classroom: everyone deserves to feel the power of great art. No background required. No intimidation allowed.
